The Wak Motel
a poetic essayโโโโโโโ
Bill recently built Wak Motel on the end of a long windy road, itโs all brand new. Vacant before due to flooding waves. He wasnโt scared of these tides or scared to start something new.
Travel by boat is required into this peninsula, past rocky mountains supporting asphalt above watery parts,ย a highway lined by tall palms. Only one roundtrip ferry reminds the spilling passengers the island had its day, now partially rebuilt, nearly swept away.ย
At dawn, Billโs a clerk waiting for guests to check out by eleven. He stays inside conditioned air escaping smoldering heat, unlike potted tropical plants extending their leaves to sun rays. He only dozes off at his desk after midnight waiting for anyone to check in with no reservation. Dreaming again of whatโs happening undersea or imagining himself on a crab ship, as his father did who fished for the deadliest catch instead of seats in front of blue light screens.
By noon, he tends fronds the way he trims his mustache that surrounds an inground pool known to overflow during heavy pour. Since the oceanโs a block away, most of the guests donโt use it these days, likely not the newest checked in who brings changing scenes. Branded shirts appear, phones ring after unexpected caves, followed by water crashing onto an unwanted place. Alarms werenโt ready to alert the series of long powerful waves causing disorder from where they began submerged underwater. He wasnโt scared of these tides or scared to start something new.
